Depending on what your building and what it's used for, pine is a good choice especially if it's some of your first projects. It's also much easier to cut, sand and router. However for tables, which take a lot of abuse, you may want to use a hardwood for durability and long lasting finish.

These three tables are made of birch and maple, some solid wood and others are a combination wood and ply wood.
