ST. ANNE’S BOARD WORKS ON BEHALF OF RESIDENTS, STAFF AND THE COMMUNITY
May 12, 2008
Arichat, NS
The Board of Directors of St. Anne Community and Nursing Care Centre in Arichat have been trying to get a grip on what the impact will be as a result of recommendations made in the Department of Health’s release of the Corpus Sanchez Report on Health Care in Nova Scotia. The Report, released in January, 2007, listed a number of recommendations, three of which dealt specifically with St. Anne’s Centre.
The Corpus Sanchez Report would have a devolution of services from the hands of the Centre’s Board of Directors over to the Board of the Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority (GASHA). Specifically, the responsibility for acute care in the Isle Madame and Louisdale areas would be turned over to GASHA. Also, under an Affiliation Agreement, long term care would remain in the hands of the Centre’s Board however, funded through GASHA.
St. Anne’s Centre Board Chair, Chuck Boudreau states that, “We have been meeting regularly as a Board to discuss the issue and to attempt to gather information from the Department of Health regarding the overall impact on St. Anne’s and the communities of Isle Madame and Louisdale. However, a meeting with the Department of Health has been difficult to schedule and the Board has taken the MLA up on his request to get information and to assist.” Boudreau goes on to say that, “the MLA provided Board members with some valuable insight this morning at a meeting held at St. Anne’s, and we have asked for his assistance in arranging a meeting with the Minister of Health.”
Community residents, Staff and residents of St. Anne’s and the Board are expressing concern over rumors of an emergency room closure and a reduction of services and staff at the local Health facility. Richmond County MLA, Michel Samson, has already made representation to the Minister of Health and will continue to act in the best interest of St. Anne’s. “We want to assure residents of Isle Madame and Louisdale that as a Board, we are working in their best interest, and we will seek confirmation that any move to devolve the services being offered at St. Anne’s will only be done as enhancements to what already exist”, says Boudreau.
